Following a disastrous foray into the German mail delivery business, Europe’s largest newspaper publisher Axel Springer said Thursday that it was now refocusing its attention on its internet and foreign businesses, reports Bloomberg. Axel Springer had a loss of €288 million euros, £226 million, last year after writing down the value of its Pin Group mail business. But the company was also busy expanding its web business and adding foreign titles to make itself less reliant on the German economy and media industry. Springer said it expects its internet business to reach sales of 400 million in 2010, and more importantly, a margin based EBITDA of more than 20 percent. The company bought several web titles last year, including AuFeminin.com, a producer of women’s web portals, Wallstreet:online, a financial news site, and local site hamburg.de.
