imageBBC Worldwide has launched a TV listings app for the iPhone that takes listings from the BBC magazine Radio Times and, for the launch period, can be downloaded for the release price of £1.79 (it will normally be £2.99). The app, developed by US mobile software developer TV Compass, is one of the few official iPhone apps from the Beeb, whose Lonely Planet also has apps. It has area-specific listings, offline mode, programme synopses and editorial recommendations from Radio Times staff. Release.

But if you don’t fancy shelling out, you could always download BSkyB’s free official Sky+ iPhone app which has listings for terrestrial TV as well as Sky channels. Plus if you have a Sky+ box, you can set your PVR to record shows remotely using your phone. Alternatively, you could go for any of the cheaper options such as TV Guide from developer Craig Merchant which costs £0.59 or TVguide@UK which is free.

On the public service side, departing BBC mobile controller Richard Titus, in a recent interview with paidContent:UK, spoke fondly of app stores, but there are as yet no BBC apps known to be on the horizon. BBC execs will no doubt be watching with interest that iPhone app store is about to hit the one billion downloads mark…
