Broadband Content Bits: BBC Canvas Social Viewing; Shazam App; Xbox-Sky VOD Roll-Out

BBC Canvas: Richard Halton, the man in charge of the BBC-convened open IPTV project Canvas, says the project’s partners are working on Canas could support social networking features to tie in with TV programmes. He says “people could play along against their friends, which could work well for entertainment formats.” He adds that a BBC Trust decision on whether to back Canvas is due “fairly imminently”. From the BBC Internet Blog . Update: A BBC spokesman points out that Halton was “just pointing to possibilities” of Canvas and work on such social features hasn’t begun.

Shazam app: Not content with publishing free and paid-for music-recognition apps for the iPhone, Windows Mobile devices and Nokia phones, Shazam is launching a new app on the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) app store, Shazam Encore. Priced at £2.99 ( or €3.99/$4.99 depending on location), Shazam claims it’s faster, more intuitive and has better search and tagging features.

Xbox-Sky: After initial technical teething problems and a scaling back of its availability, Sky’s Xbox service is now available to buy for all users. From GamesIndustry.biz.
