Broadband Content Bits: Hulu UK, Warner VOD, Virgin Web Links

- Hulu: Could the NBC/News Corp online TV JV be looking for a UK launch? Media Week pieces together disparate fragments to suggest “yes”. Says Hulu: “Hulu is working with content partners to acquire distribution rights and licenses to bring the Hulu.com experience to users in additional markets globally.” Says a sadly anonymous source: “It’s on the roadmap for sure, although the rights issues are obviously a challenge. If they can clear these hurdles, then they will (launch in the UK).” We’d call that “uncertain” for now…

- Warner Bros: The US studio has struck a partnership to place over 500 TV episodes of shows like The OC and The West Wing on the VOD TV platforms operated by Virgin Media (NSDQ: VMED) and BT (NYSE: BT) Vision. As per Virgin’s previous deals including that with HBO, the shows will be added directly to its EPG’s Catch-Up section (free to XL subscribers, £5 monthly otherwise) and obliterate any exclusivity Channel 4 and Sky One might have had on these US imports. But WB’s UK TV MD Chris Law said people would watch new episodes first on the channels “and then coming back to us with Warner TV feeding people back to them” (via Guardian).

- Virgin Media: Meanwhile, VMED is trying to make its website stickier with a number of web partnerships. Last week, it did a deal to carry overseas property news and listings from TheMoveChannel.com (it took PropertyFinder.com on board in February). Now it’s adding services from the Mysupermarket groceries price comparison site and a Christmas ecommerce store in partnership with Prezzybox., MediaWeek says.
