Broadband Content Bits: Sky Player Ads; ESPN On Virgin; BBC Natural History Vids

Sky Player ads BSkyB (NYSE: BSY) is adding online-only advertising to its live streaming TV site Sky Player. Until now the service has re-broadcast regular regular TV ads but a new scheme, Smart TV, will target users based on their personal data. Sky wants to roll out the technology to TV customers eventually. Via NMA.

ESPN (NYSE: DIS) Virgin deal: The sportscaster has signed a distribution deal with Virgin Media (NSDQ: VMED) for its forthcoming ESPN UK channel, its first since confirming the its carriage deal with Sky. The channel will show one third of Premier League football matches next season—and one sixth for three seasons after that—and VMED is trying to steal a march on Sky by giving the channel away for free during August for all customers.

BBC Natural History Unit: Good news for fans of Sir David Attenborough: Aunty is starting to digitise and publish archive clips from some its best-known wildlife shows on its website. Some are already online and the NHU is working on tagging each one with information pages specific to the species and habitats featured, like this one. More in a blog post from the BBC’s Tom Scott.
