BT To Launch Ad-Supported Content On Freeview; Another BT.com Exec Moves To Virgin Media

BT (NYSE: BT) is looking to boost revenues from its TV business with the launch of ad-supported on-demand services, including shopping, gambling and gaming available to BT Vision customers through Freeview, according to NMA.co.uk. Marc Watson, director of content and business development at BT Consumer, confirmed that BT Vision subscribers would be getting “a red-button service to link from Freeview channels through to a dedicated advertising area” in the next 12 months as part of a wider development of BT Vision’s interactive side. Watson told NMA there were more than 300,000 BT Vision subscribers, though that number may be higher in BT’s third-quarter results due out next Thursday. Both Virgin Media and BSkyB have seen profits and revenues hit by the ongoing downturn, as consumers shun non-essential entertainment offerings like sports and movies channels, and it’s unlikely that BT can avoid the same fate.

—To lose one online executive to a rival is unfortunate, but to lose two… BT.com’s head of online acquisitions Matt Walton has moved to Virgin Media (NSDQ: VMED) as head of online sales, six months after head of consumer online Jonathan Green left to become VMED’s e-commerce director.
