Dead-Tree Edition: The Ecologist Mag Ends Print Run, Goes Online

imageThis really is a case of dead trees: environmental magazine The Ecologist is shutting its print edition and re-launching as an online-only publication. The 39-year-old, privately owned magazine which sells about 20,000 copies a month will publish its last edition on June 19 as Guardian.co.uk reports. The magazine’s former editor turned director and would-be Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith is upbeat about the “exciting” changes which he said would allow its nine staff to react quicker to news than before. The move will also, of course, reduce the title’s carbon footprint. Oddly, a spokesman for the magazine said that while it wasn’t profitable, a lack of revenue wasn’t the main reason for the change. The Ecologist runs a digital edition of the magazine, but it’s unclear whether that will continue after the paper version closes.

April is already shaping up to be a bumper month for print mag closures: last week Dennis Publishing announced the closure of lads’ mag Maxim’s UK print edition and on Monday Press Gazette finally announced the end of its long-running print title, while original news will be taken off its website. Last month Bauer Media said it would close its monthly lads’ mag Arena.
