The Economist is the latest publication to try to monetise the ass off its long tail - it’s launched The Economist Historical Archive online including the over 600,000 pages from the 160 years between 1843 and 2003. The searchable archive will be available from December and is being offered with Gale, an online archivist house that gives information access to libraries, academia, government and business.

Guardian News & Media this week announced plans to offer a searchable online editions of The Guardian and The Observer from as far back as 1791 from November. More detail on pricing from Press Gazette today - the archive will be free to search but accessible only to those who pay £7.95 for 24 hours, £14.95 for three days or £49.95 a month. That’s a hefty tail.
