Forecast: ‘09 UK Web Ads Growth Will Be ‘Miniscule’

Emarketer is expecting UK online ad spend to grow by just 0.9 percent over 2009 - basically nothing. “The worldwide financial crisis has brought the rampant progress of the UK’s digital marketplace almost to a halt,” analyst Karin von Abrams says.

Why the lack of momentum? While search spend will grow 4.9 percent from last year, classified and display will dip by five percent.

But von Abrams expects a rebound in 2010, with 10 percent growth in 2011 and stronger double-digit growth spurred by the Olympics in 2012. “Classified will grow again from 2010, but at single-digit rates. Display spending will rise more sharply, especially in 2011 and beyond, when video formats begin to play a more significant role. “

Emarketer is basing its figures of IAB UK’s regular PwC study and WARC figures.
