Google In The Dock: Execs Face Defamation Charges In Italy

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) executives will answer charges of criminal defamation in a Milan court on Tuesday, stemming from a three-minute Google Video of a boy being bullied for having Down Syndrome.

The four execs are chief legal officer David Drummond, privacy chief Peter Fleischer (pictured), former CFO George Reyes (now retired) and senior product marketing manager Arvind Desikan (via FT.com). Each could face up to three years in jail if found guilty.
As it has done many times before, Google argues in a statement that it isn’t a media company and is “neutral” about the content it displays: “Seeking to hold neutral platforms liable for content posted on them is a direct attack on a free, open internet. We will continue to vigorously defend our employees in this prosecution.” Last week Google’s country manager, Massimiliano Magrini, left Google to begin his own Italian start-up fund.
