imageCambridge-based home energy use monitor AlertMe.com has received £8 million in second-round VC funding from Good Energies, Index Ventures, SET Ventures and VantangePoint Venture Partners. The money will go towards expanding the company’s distribution reach and its team. AlertMe’s system works by monitoring power and heating use in the home via wireless receivers attached to plug sockets and heating control panels—and allows users to remotely set their heating and power use. Key fobs, linked to AlertMe’s home hub, can automatically turn things off when people leave the house. Release.

It’s not that cheap to install—prices start at £149—but the company claims it can reduce heating bills by 25 percent year-on-year and that you’ll normally get your money back in savings within one year. Tugging at eco-friendly consciences, AlertMe also claims that if every UK home had its tech installed, the carbon emissions saved would be the equivalent of taking half the country’s cars off the road.
