In Print: Sun Claims 22.2 Million Readers; Northcliffe Relaunches Begin Next Week

- The Sun: The Sun is putting a bunch of stats together to claim that 22.2 million people read the title across its print, online and mobile editions in September - a 13 percent year-on-year growth (via Guardian).  No doubt this is fantastic news for the sales and marketing team to deliver to would-be advertisers, but the devil is in the detail. It was only at the end of August that the company was targeting a much more modest annual growth of two percent for print and online combined. This either means that mobile is seeing skyrocketing growth, or these numbers are just not adding up.

The Sun arrived at its figure by adding a readership figure of 15.7 million (by curiously comparing its ABC sales with National Readership Survey stats) to five million unique online users who accessed TheSun.co.uk, DreamTeamFC.com, Page3.com and NewsOfTheWorld.co.uk (from comScore), with the remaining 1.5 million mobile phone users calculated from handy internal research. The problem - ABC and ABCe, not National Readership Survey or comScore, are increasingly the online newspaper industry’s standard measurements (indeed, ABCe gives TheSun.co.uk alone a more favourable ranking than all of its online stablemates as measured by comScore, but its 3.2 million ABC print circulation is less than the alternative stat used).

- Northcliffe: As part of DMGT’s restructure, Mike Rowley, digital director for Associated Northcliffe Digital roster of 41 regional This Is sites, has taken on a new title of digital publishing director at Northcliffe Digital, with the first relaunch for the ageing fleet of portals due next week, Media Week reports. First to get the new lick of paint are sites for papers Northcliffe bought from Trinity-Mirror in Croydon, Surrey, Kent and Sussex this summer.
