Last.fm ‘Next Generation’ Preview: New Design, Player, Podcasts

Last.fm redesign preview

You’re seeing it here first… CBS Interactive’s (NYSE: CBS) Last.fm social music site is embarking on a wholesale reboot in a move that will pare down the design and add podcasts for a “next-generation” service. The re-engineering process is currently in beta test, available to paid-up subscribers, and includes a brand new look that is not altogether unlike Facebook, come to think of it.

Feature-wise, a new “library” represents user’s listening history visually, there’s a new Flash player, a new Audioscrobbler and real-time (rather than weekly) listener charts. More on the Last.fm blog, which cautions that it’s very early days (beta designs are there to involve stakeholders, test ideas and iron out kinks). No launch date has been set for the reboot…

The new design looks great. The last player is open most of the day on my computer.
