@ Mipcom: Interview: Mike Volpi, CEO, Joost: No Set-top, Mobile Plans; Exclusivity Overrated
From our sister site paidContent:UK, coverage of Joost at Mipcom including word that the well-funded startup is planning live broadcasting tests in 1Q08 and an in-depth interview with CEO Mike Volpi.
A couple of quick excerpts:
Distribution competition: “Many of these companies that put content on their website or that have their own player to show their content will eventually just say ‘okay, I give up.’”
Set-tops will wait: “When broadband reaches a point where 99.9 percent of viewers can watch it all day long without problems with it, then we can do a set-top box.”
Money: “It’s completely premature to say (how much money we’ll make) because it’s dependent on pricing of ads, level of inventory, the mixture of the type of content that people watch.”
Mobile: “I do think that’s a viable platform, for sure. I don’t think that you’re going to see us do it right now.”

I think what providers are forgetting about web-delivered TV is that people are watching it at work and while working at home. Times have changed a lot. Employers don’t care if you play streaming video and audio at your workstation, so long as you get your job down. Plus how many people work at home now, they can watch TV while working - all on the computer.
BTW I loved your Coke vending machine analogy. I am in the vending business and I always compare it to the web business as far as distribution is concerned.
Great Article!

I’m a freelance writer and blogger and most of the work I do is from home. However my desktop is not in a room with a TV so most of the time I stream Television from my pc. I am interested to try Joost out but as Charles said workplaces (mostly tech companies) don’t care if you watch tv from your desk as long as productivity is up. So even if I were to work in an office, Joost is a great service. I wonder if Joost can offer HD shows, and of course the speed of your internet is important to consider.
