Mobile content news from our sister site mocoNews.net:
— Napster (NSDQ: NAPS) Launches on O2: Napster, very slowly building up its mobile operator clients, has signed on UK and European operator O2, to launch a music service on the operator’s platform. Five million songs will be available, from major labels and 168 indies. O2 subscribers will be charged 99 pence for downloading single tracks, or GBP4 for five songs…data usage costs included in the price. It will be available on 30 different handsets. O2 has a UK exclusive for Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone, but the Napster service won’t be available on the iPhone.
— Monkey Goes Mobile: Dennis Publishing and mobile media firm Player X have launched a mobile TV channel based on its online lad’s magazine Monkey. Mad.co.uk reports the free ad-funded service will take content from the digital magazine, as well as offer up content tailored for mobiles. The service has snagged a sponsorship deal with Twentieth Century Fox’s comedy ‘Meet The Spartans.’ The film’s trailer will run within the content on Monkey’s mobile TV channel. To access the service, users will have to download the channel, which will work on all UK networks.
— Ofcom To Auction Off L-band: Ofcom confirmed today it is planning to auction radio spectrum suitable for services including mobile TV, among others. The UK telecoms regulator set a provisional deadline for applications of 10 April 2008, with the online auction likely to start at the end of April. Ofcom has identified a number of uses for the 1452-1492 MHz band, the so-called “L Band.” Aside from mobile TV, the band can also be used for mobile broadband, satellite digital radio and broadband wireless access (release).
