MyHeritage.com Buys OSN Group In European Expansion

Online genealogy firm MyHeritage.com has bought up rival OSN Group, in a move that it says will propel it into the “largest international site dedicated to families on the web.” That claim is somewhat questionable, since the 530 million profiles MyHeritage will now be able to claim is still swamped by Ancestry.com’s 1.1 billion-plus worldwide. Still, the acquisition—which adds ten sites to MyHeritage’s roster—should provide MyHeritage with additional heft, particularly in some big European markets. Hamburg, Germany-based OSN owns top sites, including Verwandt.de in Germany and Mokirewni.pl in Poland.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not released. OSN had raised two rounds of funding, most recently in January 2008.

MyHeritage—which has raised at least $15 million—has made several previous acquisitions. The company bought up Pearl Street Software in 2007 and U.K.-based genealogy site Kindo a year later.
