Rajar: Regular Internet Radio Usage Grows To 3.9 Million

It’s got a long way to go to become the standard method of radio listening, but the number of regular internet radio listeners is growing fast according to the fourth installment in Rajar’s MIDAS survey into online radio, carried out over the last six months with 1,153 respondents…

—The number of regular online listeners grew 35 percent in the last six months from 2.9 million in October 2008 to 3.9 million now
—Some 7.8 million people have ever downloaded a podcast, up from 7.2 million in October 2008 and six million in 2008. But just 4.2 million people listen to podcasts at least once a week, and perhaps more importantly, just 28 percent find the time to listen to them.
—And what chance people will pay for pdocsts? Not much: only 4.5 percent have ever parted with cash for podcasts. The future doesn’t look great for wi-fi radio makers: an inauspicious 7.1 million have heard of them, while only one million people actually own one.

Don't forget that up until the end of 2008, just over 8 million people had purchased DAB Radios. And this is with the massive publicity that DAB has had on both the TV and through the press.

Wi-Fi radios as yet have had nowhere near the same publicity, and I'd be interested to find out how well they sold if there was the same promotion for them.

There's a lot to be found on wi-fi - whilst my DAB radio has around 40 radio stations, I can pick up thousands on wi-fi, including stations such as my own - http://www.oxygenradio.co.uk that are exlusively available on wi-fi.
