Startup Advice Network Smarta Launches, Right In The Middle Of A Recession; Bebo Founder Invests

Our economy may be officially in recession now, but that hasn’t stopped BrightStation Ventures CEO Shaa Wasmund officially launching today a site to help entrepreneurs do what she’s done plenty of - start new businesses. Smarta, which we trailed in September, is aimed at giving budding business folk information and advice and comes with an investment from Bebo founder Michael Birch. Dragons’ Den VCs Theo Paphitis and Deborah Meaden plus Yo! Sushi founder Simon Woodroffe and David Saul are also investors, TCUK adds.

The site offers videos and guidance for those starting businesses, like a practical natural extension of The Apprentice or Dragon’s Den itself: “Register your business in 30 minutes, then apply for a bank account and loan. If we can’t provide the answers, we let you ask the questions; consult the community when you’re stumped and choose to ask people from your sector, region or contact base.”
Wasmund got in to business by being asked to promote a Chris Eubank fight, then founded teen girl site MyKindaPlace before it sold to BSkyB (NYSE: BSY). But the worsening economy is cutting Smarta’s potential audience - startup creation is falling. Still, Bright Station has a considerable $100 million fund behind it and Smarta is targeting 150,000 users by year’s end. For Birch, it’s the latest post-Bebo investment since helping fund dictionary site Wordia and social gaming site PlayFire. Via Brand Republic.
