News International’s flagship red-top The Sun will put its new £1 million broadcast studios (pictured) to good use by launching its own online-only radio station. Sun Talk goes live on April 20 and will broadcast for three hours each weekday between 10 am and 1 pm, as Mediaweek reports. Sun columnist and former TalkSport presenter Jon Gaunt will host the station and his first guest is Conservative Party leader David Cameron. NI has set a target of 150,000 listeners within its first year. Publishers such as Telegraph Media Group, which invested heavily in its Telegraph TV, and Guardian News and Media produce well-received podcasts and video but no newspaper so far has launched an audio-only, online radio station. Although, it remains to be seen whether The Sun’s three million readers will take the time out of their day to tune in.

Sun Online chief Pete Picton this week told C21media.net in an interview that he wasn’t planning to launch long-form, online video programming, but didn’t say anything about radio. He is, however, interested in expanding the site’ video output, perhaps by signing deals with or commissioning clips from content producers who could provide the sort of “tabloid TV’ content Sun readers like watching.
