imageVirgin Media (NSDQ: VMED) CEO Neil Berkett adamantly rejected the idea of unplugging customers over anything to do with piracy. Berkett addressed the controversial subject at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference in New York, saying: “There is no regulatory or legal framework for us to say to a customer ‘we are turning you off’, and therefore we will not.’” He added that it is the responsibility of the rights holder to look out for such things, before acknowledging that the broader Virgin brand does, of course, have quite an interest in music rights. Regardless of what the company does, he called the issue “negligible” from a financial perspective. BPI had wanted ISPs to disconnect illegal file-sharers after three warnings, but ISPs stopped short of that commitment.
