					<p>It&#8217;s been almost a year since former Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>) CEO Steve Jobs introduced the iPad 2, and according to a new report, the company plans to launch the third version of its breakthrough tablet device around a month from now in early March.
</p><p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120209/apple-to-announce-ipad-3-first-week-in-march/" title="AllThingsD">AllThingsD</a> didn&#8217;t have an exact date, but said Apple has settled on the first week of March to introduce what most people are calling the iPad 3. Less is known about the device itself, but it&#8217;s expected to feature a more powerful processor and a higher-resolution display than its predecessor.</p>

<p>This will be the company&#8217;s first major launch event since Jobs&#8217; death last October, as January&#8217;s iBooks launch event was a much smaller type of introduction. Apple continues to dominate the market for modern tablet computers, and despite upstarts like Amazon (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AMZN" class="ticker" title="AMZN">NSDQ: AMZN</a>) finally getting traction for tablet other than the iPad, Apple sold 15 million of the current model in the fourth quarter, far more than any other company.</p>

</p><p>Back in January, the RBS 6 Nations tournament <a href="http://newsroom.accenture.com/news/rbs-6-nations-signs-accenture-as-new-technology-partner.htm" title="anointed">anointed</a> Accenture with &#8220;official technology partner&#8221; status. That&#8217;s a relatively new trend, but not <em>entirely</em> - 12 months ago, the Barclays Premier League <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-eas-soccer-tech-tie-up-caused-sky-to-breach-ofcom-rules/" title="named">gave</a> Electronic Arts (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=ERTS" class="ticker" title="ERTS">NSDQ: ERTS</a>) the same status.</p>

<p>To earn the status, technology partners must each provide a service to the tournament. EA provided match data. Accenture built the <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/official-rbs-6-nations-championship/id489164343?mt=8" title="official Six Nations mobile application">official Six Nations mobile application</a>, with tournament news, live scores, squad lists, tables and video highlights.</p>

<p>Broadcasters are frequently bound, by the terms of their contracts with tournaments they air, to show the brands of these supposedly integral tournament partners. EA got to show its logo alongside live on-screen match facts on Sky Sports. Accenture&#8217;s logo is displayed along with rugby scores broadcast to by the BBC, Ireland&#8217;s RTE etc. Many other broadcasters do the same for many other sports.</p>

<p>What&#8217;s interesting here is Accenture is not just providing a private partner service to the tournament but, through the mobile app, is itself providing to the tournament&#8217;s end audience the same kind of content media consumers might expect to obtain from an organisation like the BBC</p>

<p>BBC Sport gave paidContent this statement&#8230;</p>

<blockquote><p>&#8220;Accenture are the official data supplier for The Six Nations and  as a technology company are responsible for providing the statistics for The  Championships. This &#8216;facility&#8217; is available to all partners/media covering the  event.</p>

<p>&#8220;The relationship is between &#8216;Six Nations Rugby Limited&#8217; and  &#8216;Accenture&#8217;. In accordance with BBC and EBU guidelines (which provide  for the crediting of official data processing and timing suppliers) the BBC  credits Accenture as official data supplier on a number of occasions throughout the match.</p>

<p>&#8220;For television, a corporate logo  accompanies a select number of statistical match graphics. This is common  practice, industry wide, and should not be confused with reflections given to event title sponsors.&#8221;</p></blockquote>

<p>We run this story in the interest of clarification and curiosity and not necessarily as a BBC-bashing piece.</p>

					<p>Last week, we highlighted how Facebook is <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-facebook-has-a-mobile-card-up-its-sleeve-in-addition-to-advertising/" title="already using mobile devices for commercial services">already using mobile devices for commercial services</a>&#8212;enabling people to buy Facebook Credits and charge them directly to their mobile bills. Now, it’s increasingly looking like that may just be the beginning: today, UK-based mobile billing and analytics specialist Bango (AIM: BGO) announced that it had signed a deal to provide unspecified services to the social network.
</p><p>This is a significant deal for Facebook on two separate fronts:</p>

<p>&#8212;<strong>It ties Facebook up with one of the bigger companies in the area of mobile billing</strong>: Bango is the payments provider for RIM&#8217;s App World, which yesterday once again laid claim to being the second-most profitable app storefront after Apple&#8217;s&#8212;largely because of the fact that it has a strong business in paid apps and that those apps are billed directly to users&#8217; mobile bills in 34 countries. RIM (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=RIMM" class="ticker" title="RIMM">NSDQ: RIMM</a>) yesterday claimed that <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-rim-app-world-is-now-at-60000-apps-13-percent-of-publishers-earn-100k/" title="13 percent of its App World developers earn in excess of $100,000">13 percent of its App World developers earn in excess of $100,000</a>, which is massive considering how many developers earn next to nothing.</p>

<p>In December last year, Bango also <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-amazon-may-be-eyeing-up-carrier-billing-for-its-mobile-content-business/" title="secured a deal with Amazon">secured a deal with Amazon</a>. </p>

<p>Like the Facebook <a href="http://www.stockmarketwire.com/article/4305636/Bango-signs-deal-with-Facebook.html" title="announcement">announcement</a> that deal provided no detail about what it was that Bango would do for the company&#8212;although that, too, could be an opportunity for Amazon (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AMZN" class="ticker" title="AMZN">NSDQ: AMZN</a>) to build carrier billing into its mobile apps. A spokesperson contacted today declined to comment on the details of either the Amazon or Facebook deals, although she did confirm that Amazon was an active customer.</p>

<p>The use of carrier billing also begs another question: for what? That could point to Facebook offering richer mobile services on its web platform. The could include paid content apps or the ability to pay for other goods and services, perhaps linked up with location-based deal offerings. As the <a href="http://blogs.ft.com/fttechhub/2012/02/facebook-bango-mobile-payments/?utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter#axzz1ljhmbgZF" title="FT">FT</a> points out, that&#8217;s something that Bango itself started to promote, coincidentally just when news began to leak out of Facebook&#8217;s own HTML5 push, code-named &#8220;Project Spartan.&#8221;</p>

<p>It could also mean Bango working alongside or in place of other billing partners: Bango competes directly with Facebook partners Zong and Boku.</p>

<p>&#8212;<strong>The other significant side of Bango&#8217;s business is in the area of analytics for mobile web sites as well as apps</strong>. This is a service it already provides various high-profile publishers like CNN, Fox (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=NWS" class="ticker" title="NWS">NSDQ: NWS</a>), and EA Mobile, among others&#8212;as well as to mobile ad agency AKQA&#8212;to help track how mobile content is used and consumed. That helps the publishers not only track what content &#8220;works&#8221; but also can be used to build profiles to sell advertising and marketing services.</p>

<p>If reports are true, that is another area where Facebook is going to have to start doing some serious tracking, too: the company is reportedly going to start inserting &#8220;sponsored stories&#8221; into mobile users&#8217; feeds, which would represent Facebook&#8217;s first big foray into offering marketing services to brands since filing for its IPO last week&#8212;where it pointedly mentioned it had yet to start offering such revenue-generating services.</p>

<p>Facebook is holding an <a href="https://www.facebook.com/business/fmc" title="advertising confab">advertising confab</a> at the end of this month&#8212;its first high-profile foray into wooing Madison Avenue&#8212;where it may well announce more details about how its mobile plans are progressing.</p>

<p>The other point to be made here is that it is interesting that Facebook is taking the road less traveled by companies like Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>) and exploring routes to align itself with carriers as it expands what it does on mobile. It&#8217;s not the first time: Facebook has a whole swathe of non-smartphone users that can update their statuses by mobile; many of those feature phone Facebookers are using SMS, which also require carrier interconnections to operate.

					<p>Today brings news of yet another round of capital-intensive cost-cutting for the challenged mobile phone maker Nokia: the company today announced that it would be transferring smartphone assembly from factories in Hungary, Finland and Mexico, and putting the operation in Asia.
</p><p>The plants will remain operational now for &#8220;smartphone product customization.&#8221; The news comes amidst unconfirmed reports that the company is planning to curtail its Symbian lineup after the release of the next model.</p>

<p>Nokia (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=NOK" class="ticker" title="NOK">NYSE: NOK</a>) says that the transfer will result in the loss of 4,000 jobs in total, and the reductions will take place through the end of 2012.</p>

<p>Nokia does not outline how much the move to Asia will mean in terms of money saved, but this is a decision that has been some time in the making: these were plants that were spared in the last round of cuts under CEO Stephen Elop. </p>

<p>Since then, Nokia has <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-nokia-q4-earnings-scrambling-for-grip-still-falling-1m-lumia-phones-sol/" title="reported yet more declines in its smartphone shipments">reported yet more declines in its smartphone shipments</a>, mainly around its legacy Symbian platform. The company is now gradually moving to making more of its smartphone portfolio based on Microsoft&#8217;s Windows Phone platform.</p>

<p>Now, Nokia says that the move is being made to put the manufacturing bases closer to where the different components are being made for those smartphones. That is a move we have seen from many other companies&#8212;and was the subject of a <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-your-iphone-has-to-be-made-in-china-and-apple-cant-absolve-your-guilt/" title="series of stories">series of stories</a> recently concerning Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>) in China and the role of Foxconn in that business.</p>

<p>The move to make these plants focused on customization, meanwhile, points to some focus that Nokia does seem to maintain on its software and services for its devices&#8212;a crucial part of the company&#8217;s differentiation as it moves more and more to a platform being used by its competitors as well. Others that make Windows Phone devices include Samsung and HTC.</p>

<p>The news comes amidst <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/02/03/nokia_symbian/" title="other reports">other reports</a> about Nokia that claim the company is planning to curtail its Symbian lineup after the next model comes out. </p>

<p>Symbian is gradually being phased out for Microsoft&#8217;s Windows Phone platform, but Nokia had originally said it would support the OS until 2016, and that could still be the case even if it stopped making devices based on it. Nokia <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-symbian-now-officially-no-longer-under-the-wing-of-nokia-2300-jobs-go/" title="transferred the operation of Symbian">transferred the operation of Symbian</a> to Accenture last year.</p>

<p>A spokesperson from Nokia told paidContent that the article was &#8220;speculative at best&#8221; and would not comment on device rumor or speculation: </p>

<p>&#8220;As we have previously said Symbian continues to be an important part of our portfolio and going forward it will play a more focused role as we accelerate our transition to Windows Phone,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We remain fully committed to the platform through 2016, which means on-going software support as we go forward.&#8221; </p>

<p>The company is currently rolling out an update to Symbian, Belle, and the devices remain popular in the Middle East, Russia and India, even as they have lost out to Android-based devices, Apple&#8217;s iPhone and even RIM (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=RIMM" class="ticker" title="RIMM">NSDQ: RIMM</a>) in other markets.

But further investigation into the practices reveals that it may be hard to pin down who, exactly, is to blame for the practice when it does take place.
</p><p>It all started with a report from last weekend, penned by a developer on the Touch Arcade <a href="http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=121800" title="forums">forums</a>, alleged that that some app publishers are using download bots to boost their rankings.</p>

<p>The services, it said, are being offered by third parties who will give your app the download bot treatment for as little as $5,000, and that many apps in the top rankings are using them already&#8212;pictured here. Some were also offering services to place favorable reviews on apps.</p>

<p>While Apple yesterday at first issued a &#8220;no comment&#8221; to paidContent when asked about it yesterday, overnight the company changed its tune and posted the following on its <a href="https://developer.apple.com/news/" title="developer site">developer site</a>, cautioning developers against manipulating rankings on its charts. </p>

<p>Notably, it doesn&#8217;t mention download bots specifically, but what it does do is suggest that the practice of using them, and any other services that inflate an app&#8217;s standing, will get that app the boot:</p>

<blockquote><p><strong>Adhering to Guidelines on Third-Party Marketing Services</strong><br />
Once you build a great app, you want everyone to know about it. However, when you promote your app, you should avoid using services that advertise or guarantee top placement in App Store charts. Even if you are not personally engaged in manipulating App Store chart rankings or user reviews, employing services that do so on your behalf may result in the loss of your Apple Developer Program membership. Get helpful tips and resources on marketing your apps the right way from the App Store Resource Center.</p></blockquote>

<p><strong>The question is, however, how hard it will be to substantiate who, exactly, uses these kinds of services, and who is ultimately culpable for how marketing is implemented. </strong></p>

<p>One of the bigger app developers named in the original report, CrowdStar, spoke up in the Touch Arcade forum comments twice. With the name of the company offering the service redacted in the original report, the company never firmly denied (or confirmed) whether they used that marketing company&#8217;s services, but it did deny creating or using &#8220;farms or bots for downloads or reviews.&#8221;</p>

<p>Later, co-founder and CEO Peter Relan later told paidContent in an email that his company allocates &#8220;significant six- and seven-figure budgets on advertising through channels such as iAds, Flurry, Chartboost and many others, and also do direct developer cross-promotion partnerships.&#8221; </p>

<p>But he also admitted that some of this is slightly out of its control (the italics are mine): &#8220;<em>Ad networks keep their ad partner information confidential, but we hope that none of the partners ever use farms or bots</em>. If there are policy issues identified by the mobile platform, ad networks should adapt&#8230; We ask all our ad partners to uphold platform policies and stay abreast of changes.&#8221;</p>

<p>He also said that CrowdStar has had to resort to terminating relationships with marketers who cross the line only once before. &#8220;We found that an ad partner could not satisfy our queries about bots and we stopped using the partner,&#8221; he wrote.</p>

<p>It remains to be seen whether Apple will actually start to take down apps that it deems to have used these tools&#8212;and how, exactly, it will be able to track that the practice. </p>

<p>It&#8217;s also worth wondering how and if Apple will go after the numerous companies offering these services.</p>

<p>One that I contacted (as a would-be potential customer), says that his services to add reviews and ratings to apps range in price from $99 to $499; he also offers 100 iTunes accounts for $499 to be used for &#8220;data entry&#8221; and potentially other services, like downloads. He&#8217;s just one of many, a developer told me.</p>

<p>The discovery issue is a thorny one for the world of apps, and with the total number of apps now standing at over 1 million, that problem&#8217;s only growing. App stores like Apple&#8217;s are becoming increasingly harder to navigate and for users to discover apps, and some developers will be looking for any opportunity they can to game that situation.</p>

<p>There have been some examples of other practices that result in boosting downloads&#8212;namely Tapjoy offering users free credits in a game in exchange for downloading another, which Apple also forbade&#8212;although this was a much more open system, never hiding what it was doing, and was arguably was also good for app discovery and advertising revenues.

But at a developers&#8217; conference that kicked off today in Amsterdam, the company&#8217;s new CEO, Thorsten Heins plus several others put on a brave face and laid out some milestones marking out where RIM (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=RIMM" class="ticker" title="RIMM">NSDQ: RIMM</a>) is growing&#8212;a foundation, of sorts, for how the company hopes to build itself back up in the months ahead.
</p><p>On a wider-market level, there is good reason for RIM to be hosting a developer conference in Europe: it&#8217;s a market where it has had some mixed success of late, but that includes some key wins: data from <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-rim-in-trouble-in-europe-not-in-the-uk-it-claims/" title="GfK">GfK</a> last week indicated that, in fact, BlackBerry is the most-purchased device brand at the moment in the UK. (Others say Android was the most popular, and still others claim the iPhone ran away with the market.) Thorsten Heins, in his keynote today, noted that 65 percent of the population of Europe, Middle East and Africa are still using feature phones. And that, despite everything, still spells opportunity for RIM.</p>

<p>RIM today said that it now has 60,000 apps in its App World applications storefront&#8212;still miniscule compared to the millions that live collectively on the Android Market and Apple&#8217;s App Store&#8212;but a significant improvement on the 17,000 that were in App World last January. Collectively, the store has seen 2 billion downloads as of last month, with 6 million downloads per day.</p>

<p>The company&#8217;s VP of developer relations, Alec Saunders, also repeated a claim we&#8217;ve heard before from the company: after Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>), AppWorld is the &#8220;most profitable&#8221; of mobile platforms. This is based on the company claiming to have more paid downloads than Android&#8217;s Market, where the vast majority of popular apps are free to download. Part of RIM&#8217;s approach has been to enable carrier billing to pay for app downloads&#8212;meaning that the apps get charged directly to a users&#8217; bill. That is something that is still nascent on the Market. (Apple handles billing itself via iTunes.) RIM says that it has now enabled carrier billing in 34 different countries</p>

<p>What&#8217;s interesting is that Saunders also spelled out a bit of detail on how much money developers are making on the platform: apparently, 13 percent of all app publishers have made $100,000 or more through AppWorld. That detail sparked off some responses: </p>

<p>&#8220;On the other platforms, virtually no one covers their investment as anything more than a hobby,&#8221; one developer, Matt Baxter-Reynolds, <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/mbrit/status/166834745064435712" title="tweeted">tweeted</a> to me earlier. &#8220;That metric is just not believable.&#8221; That kind of thinking underscores the idea that apps and app stores are really just there to drive more stickiness to a platform and encourage more hardware sales.</p>

<p>But another raised the point that in fact RIM most likely attracts a different kind of app maker than those who have swarmed to iOS and Android. &#8220;I&#8217;d say [that is] reasonable,&#8221; <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/IrvTheSwirv/status/166840176495165440" title="noted">noted</a> another developer, Shaun Austin. &#8220;BB doesn&#8217;t seem a platform as likely to attract hobbyists in the way Android/iOS does.&#8221;</p>

<p>Of the apps that are selling best, four out of the top 10 on App World are games for the PlayBook tablet, RIM said. You can read that as a vote for engagement for a tablet that has been less than successful against the iPad and Android-based tablet makers.</p>

<p>Last week, RIM released an updated SDK for the BBM Social Platform, a newish area the company has been exploring, leveraging the wide usage it already has for its BlackBerry Messenger service. Today it noted that it now has 50 million people engaging on that platform through various apps, with the most-used of them being the BlackBerry version of Wikitude, an augmented-reality search app.</p>

<p>Looking ahead, it&#8217;s products like the BBM Social Platform that are perhaps where RIM should be putting more of its focus: it is, after all, an experience that is unique to RIM and helps set it apart from other handset makers. The company is gearing up for two significant platform updates in the months ahead, with BlackBerry 10 for handsets and PlayBook 2.0 for the tablet, and all eyes will be on how dynamic and easy these will be to use in creating services. RIM has already said that it will be looking for close integration of the BBM Social Platform with BlackBerry 10, which will the see the company doing more in social gaming on the OS.

					<p>When you read the headlines of how ubiquitous smartphones are becoming, and how in some countries the mobile device is overtaking the PC in terms of internet access, you would think that mobile internet usage would directly follow from these facts. In reality, it seems that it still lagging behind: according to some figures out today from <a href="http://www.statcounter.com" title="StatCounter">StatCounter</a>, only 8.5 percent of internet visits came from mobile devices in 2011.
</p><p>StatCounter&#8217;s figure, which does not include tablet usage, is still nearly double the mobile figure from 2010, when mobile devices accounted for 4.3 percent of internet usage. In 2009, mobiles accounted for only 1.6 percent of visits. It also comes as internet access via desktop PCs appears to be on the wane:</p>

<p>Yet even given the growth in mobile, these still-low figures also go some way to explaining why certain businesses, like mobile advertising, are still not the money spinners you would expect them to be: the usage volumes are just simply not there yet.</p>

<p>StatCounter also provided some numbers on which handset makers are bringing in the most internet usage country-by-country. Nokia (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=NOK" class="ticker" title="NOK">NYSE: NOK</a>)&#8212;which, despite its many declines over several quarters, has managed to remain the world&#8217;s biggest smartphone maker&#8212;is the global leader in terms of internet access via mobile devices. That is partly because it is strong in those countries where users may be opting for phones instead of PCs to go online, such as China and India.</p>

<p>It will be interesting to see whether Nokia can hold on to that lead, both in internet usage and in smartphone leadership given its switch to Windows Phone for its smartphones&#8212;especially if you believe reports that Nokia is <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/02/03/nokia_symbian/" title="planning to discontinue Symbian after the development of one more device">planning to discontinue Symbian after the development of one more device</a>. Symbian is currently the company&#8217;s best-selling platform and although it has now been outsourced to Accenture, Nokia has said it would remain committed to it until 2016.</p>

<p>Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>), which <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-npd-apple-takes-top-three-slots-for-smartphone-best-sellers-in-u.s/" title="NPD">NPD</a> earlier today noted is the most popular vendor in terms of smartphone sales in the U.S., is also leading in mobile internet usage in the U.S., as well as the UK, markets where it has also performed very strongly in terms of sales. Worldwide, RIM (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=RIMM" class="ticker" title="RIMM">NSDQ: RIMM</a>) appears to be taking a nosedive at the moment. 					<p>It&#8217;s not digital advertising in the sense of display ads and search results, but it looks like we are getting a bit more color on what it is that Facebook will do first in the world of mobile marketing, and it could be coming online &#8220;within weeks.&#8221;
</p><p>The company is gearing up to start inserting &#8220;featured stories&#8221; into people&#8217;s mobile feeds&#8212;effectively, marketing-led posts&#8212;which could start appearing as soon as early March. The date and news of the launch comes from the <a href="http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/a0bd164c-500c-11e1-a3ac-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1lY792Clp" title="FT">FT</a>, which cites several people familiar with Facebook&#8217;s planning as its source.</p>

<p>Since filing its S-1 for an initial public offering last week, there has been a lot of speculation on how, exactly, mobile will fit into Facebook&#8217;s money-making picture longer term. The company was very sober in its description of its mobile business&#8212;usage is growing faster than even desktop engagement, but there&#8217;s no money in that growth yet, it admitted. </p>

<p>That was something of a bum note in a document that otherwise <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-2.7-billion-daily-likes-and-other-numbers-to-be-divined-from-facebooks-/" title="dazzles">dazzles</a> with its growth story to date.</p>

<p>If the FT report is true, it could mark the first step in Facebook&#8217;s strategy to change that and start to make marketing dollars out of its 425-million active mobile users, and take a portion of a mobile ad market that is going to top <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-2012-mobile-ad-spend-revised-up-to-2.6-billion-google-fueling-the-machi/" title="$2 billion">$2 billion</a> in the U.S. alone this year.</p>

<p>Facebook still has a long way to go before its mobile presence&#8212;via the mobile web and apps&#8212;is a mirror, or even enhanced, version of what it offers on the desktop. However, it does look like there may be also some developments underfoot there as well, in the form of <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/02/05/news-feed-app-bookmarks/" title="app buttons">app buttons</a> appearing on Facebook&#8217;s mobile web site.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the news of &#8220;featured stories&#8221; appears to be a development on a story from <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-facebook-has-a-mobile-card-up-its-sleeve-in-addition-to-advertising/" title="last week">last week</a>, which quoted Paul Gelb, head of mobile for agency Razorfish, saying that his company was trialling rich-media mobile advertising with Facebook.</p>

<p>Facebook may well be looking into more classic display ads for its mobile interfaces, but in any event Gelb later clarified that he was referring to &#8220;rich media featured stories&#8221;, not ads.</p>

<p>But if featured stories are what are in play here, Facebook gave nothing away in its own statement to paidContent: &#8220;We want to clarify that we are not working with any agency to create paid ads on our mobile platform,&#8221; a spokesperson said in an email.</p>

<p>Even so, the past few days are not the first time that the subject of Facebook mobile sponsored stories have come up: in December, Bloomberg also noted that Facebook would launch such a service in March 2012.</p>

<p>Facebook has already taken over in markets like the U.S. and UK in terms of having the biggest share of revenues in online display ads, so it seems like a no-brainer that it would take that pole position into the mobile sphere. However, issues over privacy, and the basic lack of real estate on a mobile screen have been some of the gating factors in Facebook taking up the mobile marketing opportunity more aggressively. </p>

<p>When Carolyn Everson, Facebook&#8217;s global VP of marketing solutions, spoke at paidContent&#8217;s Advertising conference in September 2011, she highlighted Facebook&#8217;s caution in this mobile:</p>

<p>“We are holding ourselves to as high a standard as possible on mobile,” she said. “I don’t rule mobile out, but we are working hard to figure out what the right model is. We haven’t figured that out yet.”</p>

<p>As we noted at the time, check-in deals have been the one exception to that so far: when a user is in a location where Facebook can deliver a relevant offer, those deals are pushed to users. But if that has driven revenues to Facebook, it was not enough to merit a mention in the S-1 form.

					<p>Much has been made of the mobile risks that Facebook laid out in its S-1 IPO filing earlier this week. Essentially, it&#8217;s seeing/pushing massive growth in mobile, but it still hasn&#8217;t tried out advertising, its most effective route to revenues, on this platform. That&#8217;s not to say it won&#8217;t. But meanwhile, there is another area where Facebook is already making money through mobile.
</p><p>For as long as Facebook has been running its Facebook Credits program&#8212;the virtual currency that users can redeem on games and other content peddled through Facebook&#8217;s network&#8212;it has been letting users top up those Credits using their mobile phones. It does this in partnership with companies like (reportedly) <a href="http://www.insidefacebook.com/2010/11/09/report-boku-to-join-zong-as-a-mobile-payments-option-for-facebook-credits/" title="Boku">Boku</a> and (definitely) Zong, the payments company bought by eBay&#8217;s PayPal last year. Users can also top up their Credits via PayPal and credit cards.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s not known how much, exactly, is purchased via the mobile channel today, but it is an example of how mobile is actually already driving significant revenue for Facebook. &#8220;Facebook Credits make a lot of money through mobile phones,&#8221; enough that Zong was &#8220;growing very fast last year&#8221; because of Facebook purchases, according to Frederic Court, a partner with Advent Venture Parnters, one of the VCs that backed Zong before the eBay (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=EBAY" class="ticker" title="EBAY">NSDQ: EBAY</a>) buy. </p>

<p>This is because while sometimes the mobile payments were actually more expensive than a PayPal or credit card transaction, they are often a lot quicker to do, especially if you are in the middle of a game. And, as with other mobile-based payment options, they appeal to those who don&#8217;t have or want to enter card details.</p>

<p>Commissions on those Credits netted Facebook $557 million in revenues in 2011. (Facebook writes in the S-1 that the &#8220;other fees&#8221; that it designates on the same line as Payments was &#8220;immaterial.&#8221;)</p>

<p>At this point, Facebook doesn&#8217;t take any commission on Credits that are purchased via mobile: that service&#8212;which uses the premium SMS channel to send a code to a user to redeem Credits on the main site, and then charges the amount directly to the user&#8217;s mobile bill&#8212;already has some other parties taking a cut, including the provider (eg Zong or Boku), the mobile carrier and even another processing middleman. Rather, Facebook&#8217;s cut comes in the form of a commission on the payments, similar to what Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>) takes for transactions on its App Store. That fee is 30 percent.</p>

<p><strong>Could Facebook eventually take more control of its payments, and potentially cut out some of those middle people?</strong> Probably not soon, in Court&#8217;s opinion. &#8220;Zong brought something to Facebook that it didn&#8217;t know how to do, and it became very deeply integrated,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I don’t see them starting to do what Zong does, which is connecting hundreds of operators.&#8221; Then again, he added, &#8220;When they have a worth of $100 billion with $10 billion on the balance sheet they can do pretty much anything they want.&#8221;</p>

<p>What&#8217;s interesting is that as Facebook starts to expand some of the other functionality on its mobile platform, that will also open up a lot more opportunities in terms of mobile transactions as well. </p>

<p>As Facebook enables and opens APIs to get publishers to build apps for its mobile platforms (via the web and apps), &#8220;Facebook will make sure those are monetized,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I have no doubt Facebook will be making money on mobile games and other content given the engagement and scale on mobile. There is an amazing opening there.&#8221; Paying for Credits that will actually get used on the device itself, he said, will be &#8220;even more natural.&#8221;</p>

<p>Facebook in the S-1 said it had 425 million monthly active users accessing the social network via mobile devices, with that number outpacing the growth of overall subscribers.</p>

<p>&#8220;Credits is a wallet that you can top up in all kinds of ways,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Facebook has created its own currency and has imposed that on anyone offering digital goods on Facebook.&#8221; If anything, that currency might have a life outside the platform, to to buy things outside of Facebook. </p>

<p>But even with the opportunity for Credits, Court doesn&#8217;t see this eventually overtaking revenues from whatever advertising Facebook plans to put on its mobile services &#8220;for a very simple reason,&#8221; which is down to how those games are played today. &#8220;If you look at Zynga, only between two and three percent of people who play actually pay. The rest play for free. Tt will be the same for Facebook on mobile, with only a fraction spending money,&#8221; he predicted. &#8220;With advertising, 100 percent of the population is exposed.&#8221;</p>

<p>Even though Facebook has listed &#8220;no mobile ads&#8221; as one of its risks on the S-1, it could be playing its cards very close to its chest: the last few days has been a lot of speculation already about how soon Facebook will launch those mobile ads. </p>

<p>Razorfish (via <a href="http://www.digiday.com/mobile/facebook-will-finally-run-mobile-ads-2/" title="Digiday">Digiday</a>) says that it is already working on a pilot for rich-media ads for the social network. </p>

<p>The blog <a href="http://www.insidefacebook.com/2012/02/02/facebook-likely-to-reject-traditional-mobile-ad-types-in-quest-to-monetize/?utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+InsideFacebook+%28Inside+Facebook%29" title="Inside Facebook">Inside Facebook</a>, meanwhile, has put its money down on sponsored stories to be the &#8220;most likely&#8221; first stab at mobile advertising on the site, with running a mobile ad network the second-most likely option. (That&#8217;s one that we explored a bit <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-facebook-may-not-be-into-mobile-ads-yet-but-plenty-of-others-are/" title="yesterday">yesterday</a> as well.)</p>

<p><strong>Update</strong>: Razorfish&#8217;s VP of mobile, Paul Gelb, has made a correction on how his comments were portrayed in the Digiday story (via <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/PaulGelb/status/165488380887568384" title="Twitter">Twitter</a>): his agency is <em>not</em> working on any mobile ad buying with Facebook. &#8220;In the interview I was referring to rich media featured stories, not paid ads,&#8221; he said. </p>

<p>A Facebook spokesperson, via email, added the following: &#8220;We want to clarify that we are not working with any agency to create paid ads on our mobile platform.&#8221;

However, as the day progressed, an injunction on the sale of the older iPhone models was lifted as the cases continue to develop.
</p><p>Today&#8217;s ruling in a Mannheim court granted Motorola a permanent injunction on Apple products that use its iCloud technology, specifically around push email services, and, like many patent cases, is not based on a recent patent but an older one&#8212;in this case, one that Motorola holds around paging devices (one of the company&#8217;s earliest wireless products).</p>

<p><strong>Update</strong>: Motorola has issued a formal response to the decision: </p>

<blockquote><p>&#8220;We are pleased that the Mannheim court has recognized the importance of our intellectual property and granted an enforceable injunction in Germany against Apple Sales International,&#8221; it said in an emailed statement.</p></blockquote>

<p>Apple, meanwhile, said that it is already appealing in this case:</p>

<blockquote><p>&#8220;Apple believes this old pager patent is invalid and we&#8217;re appealing the court&#8217;s decision,&#8221; Apple told paidContent in an emailed statement.</p></blockquote>

<p>But before you start thinking that this might mean that various new, iCloud-enabled Apple products will be disappearing from German retailers, think again. PaidContent understands that the injunction applies only to a specific function: the instant, push email service that Apple offers via MobileMe/iCloud, and there are only a limited number of users in Germany actually taking that service. Plus, there are already at least two workarounds available: for customers to either download the email manually; or to set up a script to check email regularly anyway. </p>

<p>The case is still developing so it remains to be seen how the injunction will play out.</p>

<p><strong>More pressing, it seems, is the outcome of another Motorola court case that dates back from December, and which has been in the works for <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-the-android-pile-up-on-apple-in-europe-motorola-gets-injunction-in-germ/" title="even longer">even longer</a>, which has resulted in Apple pulling some older models of the iPad and iPhone from its online store in Germany</strong>. </p>

<p><strike>These products were pulled overnight and are <a href="http://www.apple.com/de/iphone/" title="indeed absent">indeed absent</a> when paidContent visited the online store this morning. They are, however, still being sold offline through Apple stores and other retailers.</strike></p>

<p><strong>Update</strong>: The temporary injunction has now been lifted, but Motorola says the case continues:</p>

<blockquote><p>&#8220;We are pleased that the Mannheim court has recognized the importance of our intellectual property and granted an enforceable injunction in Germany against Apple Sales International. Although the enforcement of the injunction has been temporarily suspended, Motorola Mobility will continue to pursue its claims against Apple.&#8221;</p></blockquote>

<p>Earlier, Apple said it would appeal the decision:</p>

<blockquote><p>&#8220;While some iPad and iPhone models are not available through Apple&#8217;s online store in Germany right now, customers should have no problem finding them at one of our retail stores or an authorised reseller. Apple is appealing this ruling because Motorola repeatedly refuses to license this patent to Apple on reasonable terms, despite having declared it an industry standard patent seven years ago.&#8221;</p></blockquote>

<p>This case, essentially, is another chapter in Apple&#8217;s European battle over FRAND patents, which fall under rules that require equipment makers to license IP on &#8220;Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory&#8221; terms, in order to make sure that IP that has been declared industry standard is not intentionally made more expensive for competitors than non-competitors in a field like smartphones.</p>

<p>Apple has been facing other issues over FRAND terms in Europe, specifically with Samsung. That case looks like it may have taken a turn in Apple&#8217;s favor: this week the <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-applesamsung-legal-skirmishes-have-a-new-player-the-european-commission/" title="European Commission said">European Commission said</a> that it would start an antitrust investigation into Samsung and whether it has violated FRAND rules in its dealings with Apple. The EC cautions that it has not yet declared a judgement in this investigation so it could still go either way.</p>

<p>In this Motorola FRAND case, Motorola Mobility says that it approached Apple in 2007 with its FRAND licensing terms and attempted to negotiate a license with Apple for over three years. </p>

<p>&#8220;Apple&#8217;s refusal to negotiate in good faith, as well as their aggressive litigation campaign against Android, left Motorola Mobility with no option other than to seek to enforce the Company’s rights and patent portfolio. Motorola Mobility remains committed to licensing rather than litigation as the proper vehicle for resolving intellectual property disputes,&#8221; Motorola told paidContent in an emailed statement.</p>

<p>You might recall that disputes over FRAND licensing was the <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-samsung-faces-aussie-tablet-injunction-apple-accuses-it-of-patent-ambus/" title="issue">issue</a> in the FRAND dispute with Samsung&#8212;the case that spurred the EC investigation</p>

<p>Whether this will result in a FRAND investigation of Motorola by the EC remains to be seen, but if it does that could have wider implications since the Commission is already investigating antitrust issues regarding the proposed merger between Motorola and Google.</p>

<p><strike>Given that this is all really about stabbing at your competition on a legal level, one possible outcome might be particularly ironic: if what people want are Apple products, by not being able to buy the less expensive, older models, they may end up opting for the 4S in the end and boost sales of the company&#8217;s highest margin, priciest device. A Win-Win in that case?</strike>

					<p>Two European companies are this week taking venture capital in the games space&#8230;
</p><p><a href="http://flaregames.com/" title="Flaregames">Flaregames</a> of Karlsruhe, Germany, is taking €6 million, led by Angry Bird backer Accel, to &#8220;scale&#8221; the company, hire new talent and to to market its upcoming series of free-to-play mobile games.<br />

“Our first focus is on getting fun, high-quality games to market, and reaching the mass-market as well as mid-core gamers with our line-up this year,” said founder Klaas Kersting (via release).</p>

<p>“The mobile games business will likely be larger than the social games business,” according to Accel partner Harry Nelis. The firm is planning five games by year&#8217;s end.</p>

<p>Separately, <a href="http://tusjuegos.com/" title="Tusjuegos">Tusjuegos</a>, a Spanish portal for buying and downloading PC and Mac games, is taking €420,000 from Spain&#8217;s VentureCap and others, <a href="http://loogic.com/420-000-euros-de-inversion-en-tusjuegos/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Loogiccom+(Loogic.com)" title="Loogic reports">Loogic reports</a>.</p>

<p>Spain is plagued by illegal downloading. Tusjuegos is aiming to ensure game buying, after the box era subsides, remains legal in the online downloading arena.</p>

					<p>Mobile advertising may not yet be something that Facebook has explored in its strategy to monetize its massive user base, and given the growth we’ve seen in the space, you can argue that it might be missing a trick.</p>

<p>What&#8217;s interesting is that while companies like Google are certainly making huge strides in mobile advertising (more on that below), there are a number of mid-range/smaller players that are also seeing significant growth, in a market that <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-2012-mobile-ad-spend-revised-up-to-2.6-billion-google-fueling-the-machi/" title="eMarketer projects">eMarketer projects</a> will be worth $2.6 billion in 2012. </p>

<p>The implication here is that there is an opportunity, and one that is engaging users&#8212;or at least users are showing a great tolerance for the ads, as a tradeoff for other content. That opportunity is one that is being taken not just obvious Facebook competitors like Google, but many others. </p>

<p>Longer term that kind of fragmentation will probably lead to more consolidation, but for now as individual companies they continue to grow (and get funded, if you take the latest numbers from <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-rutberg-mobile-accounted-for-over-40-6.3bn-of-all-tech-vc-in-2011/" title="Rutberg">Rutberg</a> on VC investments as an indication). </p>

<p>Here&#8217;s three examples of that growth from just the past day:</p>

<p>Today, mobile ad network <a href="http://www.mojiva.com" title="Mojiva">Mojiva</a> is claiming that it (not Google, not Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>), not Millennial Media) has become the first mobile ad network to reach more than one billion unique mobile devices&#8212;smart phones, feature phones, tablets and touch screen devices such like the iPod Touch&#8212;globally on a monthly basis. It says that the U.S. is its single-biggest market, with 224 million monthly unique devices, within a reach that extends to 190 countries, covering 8,000 publishers and apps, with more than 45 billion monthly ad requests overall. (Note: we&#8217;re hoping to catch up with Mojiva to get clarification on how it has reached the one-billion mark before bigger competitors.)</p>

<p>That news comes on the back of a couple of other significant mobile ad milestones announced in just the last 24 hours&#8212;again some of the smaller players. <a href="http://www.inner-active.com" title="Inneractive">Inneractive</a>, a mobile app monetization exchange, says that in the last year it has seen some very significant growth on its own mobile network: ad clicks are up by more than 700 percent; ad requests up by nearly 700 percent; a 981 percent increase on Apple&#8217;s iOS platform ad requests; and ad revenues up by 522 percent. We&#8217;ve asked Inneractive if we can get more concrete numbers behind those percentages. In the meantime, there&#8217;s an infographic below with more details on their growth in the last year, including geographical breakdowns.</p>

<p>A third player, <a href="http://www.jumptap.com" title="Jumptap">Jumptap</a>, has some numbers specifically around how mobile advertising is playing out across tablets&#8212;again, using stats from its own ad network: tablet network traffic was up by 229 percent the day after Christmas compared to the same period a year ago. Over the whole of that month, apparently the Kindle Fire&#8217;s share on Jumptap&#8217;s network went up from 10 percent to 30 percent suggesting &#8220;a trend for lower-priced tablets.&#8221; And overall, it notes that Android has the majority of impressions on its network (up to 59 percent in December 2011, compared to 38 percent in December 2010), with Apple&#8217;s share diminishing further (down seven percent to 22 percent in December 2011). </p>

<p>And what about Google? (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=GOOG" class="ticker" title="GOOG">NSDQ: GOOG</a>) It seems that for now its biggest strength in mobile advertising remains in mobile search, where it <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/02/01/google-mobile-search-ad-requests-more-than-doubled-in-2011/" title="expects revenues to more than double">expects revenues to more than double</a> in 2012 compared to 2011, bringing in sales of $5.8 billion compared to $2.5 billion last year&#8212;just under double the revenue that Facebook made in advertising on its main, non-mobile site last year.</p>

After all, Apple was only making smartphones and Nokia was still leading in that still-niche category, as well as mobiles overall. Fast forward to today, and the swift rise of Apple underscores (once more) how short-sighted that view really was.
</p><p>According to Q4 figures out from IDC, Apple is now the third-largest handset maker in the world, jumping two places from its number-five position in Q3. The reason for the rise, note the analysts, was not so much because it&#8217;s now selling cheaper, older iPhones&#8212;it is&#8212;but because of strong sales of its newest (and therefore premium-priced) iPhone 4S handset. </p>

<p>But it&#8217;s not just Apple that is a smartphone force, of course. The other three in the top-five rankings also make feature phones, but they are all also part of the huge push that Google (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=GOOG" class="ticker" title="GOOG">NSDQ: GOOG</a>) has made into smartphones via its Android platform. Having a feature phone and smartphone strategy is a double-threat to Nokia.</p>

<p>Apple&#8217;s rise still puts it at 8.7 market share&#8212;some 14 percent behind the Nokia and Samsung bracket&#8212;but it is an example of how a much the market has turned around in the last few years, that a handset maker can even be in spitting distance of the lead on the strength of a smartphone-only portfolio.</p>

<p>Apple saw astounding growth in Q4 and 2011 overall&#8212;128 percent and 96 percent respectively. However, it will be worth watching whether that trend will continue in the quarters ahead amidst bigger economic factors:</p>

<p>IDC notes that the mobile phone market grew less in the last quarter than it has in the past two years, with vendors shipping 427.4 million units. &#8220;The mobile phone market exhibited unusually low growth last quarter, which shows it is not immune to weaker macroeconomic conditions worldwide,&#8221; <a href="http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS23297412" title="writes">writes</a> analyst Ramon Llamas. </p>

<p>Ironically, that seemed to translate to a bigger-than-expected decline in cheaper feature phones than a slowdown in pricier smartphones. Despite that, IDC says that feature phone sales still accounted for the majority of handset sales in the last quarter. </p>

<p>Nokia&#8212;which actually saw <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-nokia-q4-earnings-scrambling-for-grip-still-falling-1m-lumia-phones-sol/" title="sales of feature phones rise in the last quarter">sales of feature phones rise in the last quarter</a> as it continued its decline in smartphones&#8212;seems catching only part of the wave that IDC describes. It is still holding on to the number-one slot, but given that its biggest driver right now is still feature phones, that leadership may well continue on its fast decline. </p>

<p>But if IDC&#8217;s forecast is a wave, then it is really Samsung that is the big Kahuna at the moment, with both strong feature phone and smartphone stories and reaching record levels of 90 million units overall for the quarter and more than 300 million for the year. IDC notes that fewer than 20 million units separated it from Nokia in the last quarter. Samsung earlier in 2011 already surpassed Nokia as the world&#8217;s biggest smartphone vendor, according to IDC figures.</p>

<p>Apple and Samsung are not the only ones benefiting from a strong smartphone offering in the top-five. </p>

<p>ZTE, which started to introduce smartphones into its portfolio last year and has huge ambitions in this space both on its own brand and partnering with carriers, took a big leap, the second-biggest after Apple for the year, in fact. </p>

<p>In contrast, LG (SEO: 066570), which has been <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-ces-available-now-android-oem.-wltm-caring-ambitious-strong-partner/" title="somewhat rudderless in its smartphone strategy and equally less exciting in its feature phone offerings">somewhat rudderless in its smartphone strategy and equally less exciting in its feature phone offerings</a>, saw very big declines, much bigger than Nokia&#8217;s: over 24 percent over the year compared to Nokia&#8217;s eight percent. </p>

<p>With ZTE just behind LG at the moment, it  looks like those two might be swapping places in the quarters ahead if LG doesn&#8217;t manage to turn things around. So which should it concentrate on fixing first: smartphones or feature devices?</p>

</p><h3>845 million active users, 100 billion &#8220;friendships&#8221;, 250 million photos uploaded daily</h3><p>
That works out to an average of 118.3 friends per user, and an average of <strike>3.4</strike> 0.3 pictures uploaded each day by those active users. Among those 845 million active users, more than half&#8212;483 million&#8212;are actually daily active users (taking the photo average up to 0.5 uploads per day, or around 15 per month). They&#8217;ve gone up by 48 percent since December 2010, when they stood at 327 million DAUs. Those numbers sound big on one hand, but not so big on another: doing some very basic math, this works out to average revenues per user of only $4.39. As a point of comparison, Google (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=GOOG" class="ticker" title="GOOG">NSDQ: GOOG</a>) currently makes about $36 per user; Yahoo (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=YHOO" class="ticker" title="YHOO">NSDQ: YHOO</a>) $16 per user (via <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505124_162-57369642/facebooks-ipo-more-yahoo-than-google/" title="CBS">CBS</a>).</p>

<h3>$1 billion in net income on revenues of $3.711 billion</h3><p>
That works out to net income at about 30 percent of revenues in 2011, up slightly from the previous two years when net income was at about 29 percent of revenues. A sign of improving efficiencies?</p>

<h3>$3.2 billion in ad revenue</h3><p>
That&#8217;s the ad revenue figure for 2011, out of total revenues of $3.7 billion. The rest of its revenue is made up by Facebook Credits and other payments. The growth in ad revenues at the moment appears to be slowing down: Facebook says between 2009 and 2010, ad revenues grew by 145 percent, but then between 2010 and 2011 it grew by only 69 percent. There&#8217;s a clear sign that Facebook will need to further diversify how it makes its money if that trend continues. Credits and other fees are still very much on the rise and becoming a more prominent part of the overall revenue pie. In 2011 they amounted to 15 percent of revenues ($557 million); in 2010 they accounted for only five percent ($106 million).</p>

<h3>$0 in mobile advertising</h3><p>
Facebook currently makes nothing from advertising on mobile devices because it has yet to extend ads to its mobile platforms. The S-1 didn&#8217;t specify whether it planned to introduce this and in fact cast its mobile prospects in the most sober light possible: Facebook thinks that growth in mobile monthly active users will exceed the growth of overall MAUs &#8220;for the foreseeable future&#8221; as Facebook continues to encourage more mobile use of its platform. There must be a business agenda in that but Facebook doesn&#8217;t spell it out here. In fact, it cautions that as more people could just start using the mobile platforms more than the desktop version, where ads do appear, &#8220;if we are unable to successfully implement monetization strategies for our mobile users, our revenue and financial results may be negatively affected.&#8221;</p>

<p>Zuck&#8217;s salary is going down to $1 from next year. At the moment Facebook has 3,200 employees in total. That works out to an average revenue per employee of $1,159,687.50.

</p><p>Instead, Samsung will be presenting it at its own-branded event, with less of a gap between the product launch and actual roll-out.</p>

<p>&#8220;Samsung is looking forward to introducing and demonstrating exciting new mobile products at Mobile World Congress 2012. The successor to the Galaxy S II smartphone will be unveiled at a separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product. Samsung stays committed to providing the best possible mobile experiences for customers around the world,&#8221; a spokesperson told paidContent, via email today. </p>

<p>The Android-based S II (pictured here with its best enemy, the iPhone 4S) has been one of Samsung&#8217;s best sellers since launching last year&#8212;although Samsung <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-samsung-smartphones-up-30-percent-but-you-have-to-guess-how-many-we-sol/" title="hasn't given exact sales figures">hasn&#8217;t given exact sales figures</a>&#8212;and many have been anticipating the upgrade, which will apparently feature a faster processor, better camera and other enhancements. </p>

<p>One of the big issues with the S II, however, was that while Samsung unveiled the device at the 2011 MWC event, it didn&#8217;t launch in Europe until summer, and the U.S. several months later, in <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-hits-u.s.-will-cost-199-at-sprint/" title="September">September</a>. </p>

<p>Did that possibly steal some thunder from the launch? As smartphone competition hots up&#8212;including leaks of the first BlackBerry 10 &#8220;London&#8221; devices and even a new iPhone coming this year&#8212;that&#8217;s a variable that Samsung probably doesn&#8217;t want to explore again.</p>

<p>But while Microsoft (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=MSFT" class="ticker" title="MSFT">NSDQ: MSFT</a>) has pulled out of CES, and Apple has been running its own launch events for years, Samsung doesn&#8217;t seem to be bowing out of the trade show peep show altogether. There have been rumors of Samsung unveiling its first Tizen handsets&#8212;that is, the new linux OS that it is developing with Intel (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=INTC" class="ticker" title="INTC">NSDQ: INTC</a>) from the ashes of MeeGo&#8212;which could point to a new direction altogether for the Korean handset maker. There are also reports of further tablets on the cards.

</p><p>Crackberry, fresh off <a href="http://crackberry.com/crackberry-interviews-thorsten-heins" title="an interview with new RIM CEO Thorsten Heins">an interview with new RIM CEO Thorsten Heins</a>, has somehow obtained a new image of the BlackBerry London, a concept device we&#8217;ve heard about before but that appears to have gone through a redesign or two. In a breathless and fawning account that skates over all the issues with the BlackBerry 10 software, <a href="http://crackberry.com/exclusive-first-image-blackberry-10-superphone" title="Crackberry tells us">Crackberry tells us</a> that the phone resembles &#8220;a downsized Playbook&#8221; and that slightly different versions are planned for the U.S. and U.K. markets.</p>

<p>While it may have a few friends in the fanboy blogging community, RIM is going to need a lot more than that to reinvent its brand by the time these handsets arrive toward the end of 2012. And <a href="http://blogs.blackberry.com/2012/01/be-bold-infographic/" title="we're not talking about cartoon superheroes">we&#8217;re not talking about cartoon superheroes</a>.</p>

<p>It took RIM a year to make its BlackBerry 10 software compatible with its famous e-mail system, and the Playbook tablets have been a dismal failure. And it apparently still hasn&#8217;t settled on a chipset for these phones, with Crackberry suggesting the company is still debating between Texas Instruments and Qualcomm (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=QCOM" class="ticker" title="QCOM">NSDQ: QCOM</a>) months after former CEO Mike Lazaridis told investors the phones would be delayed because RIM needed a special processor that wouldn&#8217;t be available until the middle of this year.</p>

<p>Should RIM be able to join the modern mobile software ranks, it might be able to reverse its decline in the U.S., but there&#8217;s an awful lot more that we&#8217;ll need to see before we can handicap those chances.</p>

					<p>Another piece in Apple&#8217;s worldwide expansion looks like it might at long last be coming into view: the leading CDMA operator in China, China Telecom, says that it will start to sell the iPhone 4S by the end of this month or early March.
</p><p>The report, from the English-language <a href="http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/usa/business/2012-01/31/content_14509235.htm" title="China Daily">China Daily</a>, says that China Telecom released a statement this week that said it was beginning &#8220;preparatory work&#8221; to launch the iPhone 4S&#8212;the first time that China Telecom would offer one of Apple&#8217;s smartphones.</p>

<p>China Telecom has been talking of an iPhone launch for some time now, touting Apple&#8217;s work on a CDMA-based device even before the company launched its first non-UMTS handset with Verizon last year. It seems that the big holdup has been getting the right operating licenses for the device. There are three, and they have apparently now all been secured.</p>

<p>If China Telecom does indeed get the device in the next month, it will make it the third CDMA operator to carry the iPhone, after Verizon Wireless (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=VZ" class="ticker" title="VZ">NYSE: VZ</a>) and Sprint (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=S" class="ticker" title="S">NYSE: S</a>) in the U.S.</p>

<p>Pricing details for the device have not been disclosed but given how <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-violence-at-apple-beijing-store-leads-to-cancelled-iphone-4s-launch/" title="iPhone-crazy">iPhone-crazy</a> the Chinese public appear to be, this will probably kick-off a price war for the device&#8212;although the carriers&#8217; offerings will likely still come at a premium <a href="http://micgadget.com/21401/wtf-iphone-6-is-available-in-china-now/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+micgadget+%28M.I.C.+Gadget%29" title="compared to the cheap knock-offs that one can buy in the country">compared to the cheap knock-offs that one can buy in the country</a>.</p>

<p>The race for 3G subscribers is actually quite close in China: At the moment, the only carrier with the official right to sell the iPhone on its network is China Unicom, the second-largest operator after China Mobile; China Telecom ranks third. Among those, China Unicom is the fastest-growing, thanks in part to the success of the iPhone. Among the three of them, China Mobile still has the most 3G subscribers, with 51.2 million; China Unicom has 40 million; China Telecom has 36.3 million.</p>

<p>The move to add China Telecom as a carrier partner will also make a big difference to Apple&#8217;s exposure in the country. China Daily, citing figures from Gartner, notes that Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>) currently is the fourth-largest smartphone vendor in the country, trailing behind Nokia (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=NOK" class="ticker" title="NOK">NYSE: NOK</a>), Samsung and Huawei.&nbsp;

</p><p>Docomo <a href="http://www.nttdocomo.com/pr/2012/001570.html" title="says">says</a> The two devices, available only in Japan, are the first to kick off a new phase for Disney Mobile, as it partners with Docomo on a &#8220;Disney Mobile on docomo&#8221; venture. </p>

<p>But it appears that Disney Mobile will also continue to work with Softbank: the two announced their own two Android devices in <a href="http://www.prepaidmvno.com/2011/09/30/disney-mobile-japan-announces-two-cute-android-phones/" title="October 2011">October 2011</a>.</p>

<p><strong>In both the cases of the Softbank and docomo devices, it looks like Disney Mobile has gone down the forked OS route, as so many other device makers in Asia have before it</strong>. </p>

<p>In the two new devices launched today, gone is the Android Market, which has been replaced by Docomo&#8217;s own dmarket. Mickey and other Disney iconography figures strongly throughout, from the clock and other icons on the homescreen to prioritized links through to Disney mobile content. The services also put Docomo&#8217;s mobile payment service, Osaifu-Keitai, front and center.</p>

<p><strong>The content element is particularly eye-catching part of this deal</strong>: Docomo says that those who take the devices will get free access to movie services, live wallpapers, puzzles, games and other Disney entertainment. By &#8220;free&#8221; that means the content itself comes without a charge; users still have to pay for data usage. </p>

<p>Still, you do have to wonder if we will see more brands trying to do something like this in the future as the cost of making customised smartphones becomes even cheaper.</p>

<p>Other benefits include offers for Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, both of which are already sponsored by Docomo. </p>

<p>Given how consumer-friendly this all looks, it&#8217;s surprising that Docomo is launching the devices with pretty clunky names. One device, the F-08D, will go on sale February 17; the equally-catchy P-05D will debut in March. Perhaps those names will change to different brands by the time their debuts roll around.

					<p>The rising popularity of streaming video services is causing a knock-on effect for companies serving ads around that content. And here&#8217;s another example of that in action: today UK-based video ad platform <a href="http://www.videoplaza.com/" title="Videoplaza">Videoplaza</a> is announcing a new $12 million round of funding. 
</p><p>Leading the second round of investment were Qualcomm (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=QCOM" class="ticker" title="QCOM">NSDQ: QCOM</a>) Ventures and Innovacom, along with participation from prior investors Creandum and Northzone; and takes the total amount of funding in the company to almost $18 million.</p>

<p>Videoplaza says that it will be using the investment to help fund its international growth and product development. Those two areas appear to be running fast at the moment anyway: the company says that its client base already spreads across 17 markets, and in the past year its ad serving volumes grew five-fold. Some of its clients include the publisher Dennis, French commercial broadcaster M6 and Spanish newspaper group La Vanguardia and the France-Telecom-owned interactive ad network Unanimis, and it partners with other established names in the business, like Brightcove, to help monetize their video ad traffic.</p>

<p>Videoplaza&#8217;s target is to tap into some of the $160 billion that is estimated to be spent on TV advertising annually at the moment, and following those ad budgets as media buyers try to chase down viewers as they start watch more and more of that TV content on an ever-growing variety of screens, from IP-enabled TVs to smartphones, tablets, cars and desktop computers&#8212;and who knows what else. Videoplaza projects that by 2020 there will be more than 10 billion connected devices in consumers&#8217; hands that could be used for consuming streamed video. </p>

<p>It is not the only one: companies like YuMe, spotXchange, BrightRoll (a Videoplaza partner), Hulu, CBS (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=CBS" class="ticker" title="CBS">NYSE: CBS</a>) and many, many others are also scrambling for substantial market share in this space. It&#8217;s still a fast-growing area, with the amount of ad-funded, streamed video content still very much on the rise&#8212;both in terms of volumes and consumption&#8212;but there is bound to be some consolidation on the cards among these ad players, too.</p>

<p>A stake from a company like Qualcomm&#8212;which plays a central role in making processors and other parts and software for mobile devices&#8212;could potentially give Videoplaza a leg up in that respect. At the moment the vast majority of video ad consumption for Videoplaza is still coming from PCs: only eight percent came from other devices. But the company believes that by 2013 (that is, in a year) that will shift to a 50-50 balance.

					<p>Some fallout from the various asset offloads we have seen from Nokia (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=NOK" class="ticker" title="NOK">NYSE: NOK</a>) in the last year: <a href="http://www.synchronica.com" title="Synchronica">Synchronica</a>, which bought Nokia&#8217;s messaging business for <a href="http://moconews.net/article/419-nokias-asset-offload-continues-messaging-biz-goes-to-synchronica-for-25/" title="$25 million in June 2011">$25 million in June 2011</a>, has itself become a takeover target&#8212;apparently because it will not be able to make payments on money still owed to Nokia.
</p><p>UK-based Synchronica&#8217;s main suitor is the Switzerland-based <a href="http://www.myriadgroup.com" title="Myriad Group">Myriad Group</a>, which develops mobile software services that it says have been loaded into some 2.5 billion devices, including every Android device. </p>

<p>In a <a href="http://www.londonstockexchange.com/exchange/news/market-news/market-news-detail.html?announcementId=11101753" title="market announcement">market announcement</a> from Myriad, it outlines the main reasons why it believes Synchronica needs to sell itself:</p>

<p>Essentially, Synchronica owes Nokia $20.2 million by December 31, 2015. However, &#8220;the Myriad Board does not believe that Synchronica, given its current financial position and future prospects, will be able to repay the Nokia Debt and would also question Synchronica&#8217;s ability to meet the current repayment schedule in the short term.&#8221; </p>

<p>Myriad says it has had confirmation from Nokia that were Synchronica to be sold, the buyer would not need to pay the outstanding debt immediately.</p>

<p>A Synchronica spokesperson, meanwhile, would not confirm whether Myriad&#8217;s assertion over the inability to make Nokia payments was true or not.</p>

<p>Earlier this month, Synchronica issued a <a href="http://www.synchronica.com/p/announcement.php?id=504" title="statement">statement</a> that said it expects to report full year 2011 revenues of approximately $23 million, &#8220;marginally ahead of market expectations&#8221;, and an increase of 111 percent compared to 2010. However it also posted increasing losses over the course of last year.</p>

<p>Synchronica purchase of Nokia&#8217;s messaging gateway business in June 2011 promised a big step up for business. <strong>It&#8217;s not clear, however, whether that messaging business was actually profitable to run when it was bought by Synchronica&#8212;and if Myriad&#8217;s assertions are true, Synchronica may not have been able to make a go of it in any case.</strong></p>

<p>Before the Nokia buy, Synchronica focused on messaging services for emerging and developing markets. The Nokia deal, at the time worth more than the market value of Synchronica itself, gave the company entry to more mature mobile markets: it included the transfer of 10 carrier customers&#8212;including AT&amp;T (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=T" class="ticker" title="T">NYSE: T</a>), Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=S" class="ticker" title="S">NYSE: S</a>)&#8212;which used Nokia&#8217;s technology in their own-branded messaging and email services, covering some six million users. The revenues from those deals were never disclosed by Synchronica but they worked on a per-user, per-month basis and were recurring.</p>

<p>The original deal also included a payment from Nokia to preload those messaging services into its own devices for a further 18 months, worth $18.2 million; a long-term relationship for further development of the messaging gateway and client software; the transfer of 250 employees; and 10 patents with royalty-free licensing for a further eight still owned by Nokia. </p>

<p>Myriad is offering £20.63 million ($32.5 million) for Synchronia, or 13 pence per share, according to the statement. This is the second time that Myriad has made an offer for Synchronia; the first, back in November, was rejected by Synchronica&#8217;s board, and the two sides have been negotiating since then. Today&#8217;s offer represents a premium of 70.49 percent on the company&#8217;s trading price on November 10, the day before Myriad&#8217;s first offer.</p>

<p>Myriad, which itself has a market capitalization of approximately 197.05 million Swiss francs ($214 million), develops linux-based and java-based software solutions&#8212;for example a piece of software that unifies all a users&#8217; contacts from different social networks into a single screen&#8212;as well as services for other consumer electronics devices such as connected TVs.
